General Questions

Scalp Micropigmentation or (“SMP”) is a hair tattoo, a medical and non-surgical cosmetic service that brings the illusion of closely cut hairs on a bald head, or adding density to a thinning hair line.

Some clients find that Scalp Micropigmentation is not painful, though there is some level of pain and discomfort felt during the service. Your experience will depend on your own pain tolerance and comfort level. Generally, the majority of clients who undergo Scalp Micropigmentation rate the pain level between 3 to 5 on a scale from 1 to 10. You should at the most only experience a nuisance level of discomfort and not experience high levels of pain. As with general tattooing, there are areas of the scalp that are more sensitive than others to treat. These areas typically include the temples and the skin located just above the ears.

If you are concerned about the potential pain involved with your Scalp Micropigmentation service, you may ask that your service provider use a numbing cream. Be aware that if you do decide to take a pain reliever before the procedure, you may need to arrange for somebody else to provide you with transportation, rather than driving yourself. Some clients may require breaks throughout the procedure, and this is perfectly normal and others are able to distract themselves with reading.

The cost of Scalp Micropigmentation procedures is usually estimated by palm size. For every practitioner palm size the cost is approximately $1,000. The practitioner’s palm size determines the amount of area that can be covered relative to the resting position of the hand in a given time frame. The total cost of Scalp Micropigmentation can range depending on the size of area to be covered, but typically starts between $1,000 and $4,500+. A consultation is an important part of determining coverage, density and ultimate cost.

Scalp Micropigmentation can last between 6+ years before a touch-up or new application may be required. The process combines traditional and micropigmentation techniques. When performed correctly by a qualified professional it is possible to achieve a hyper-realistic recreation of your natural hair, giving the illusion that hair exists where it previously did not.

Scalp Micropigmentation does not damage hair follicles as the procedure involves working at a depth that is more shallow than that of the follicles themselves.

Scalp Micropigmentation is not specific to any gender, and the process can be applied to anyone who would like to achieve a specific hair restoration look. Many women seek out Scalp Micropigmentation as a way to blend away areas of baldness or thinning hair. The process is just as effective and easily more natural particularly where there are already large areas of hair to work with.

It all starts with a consultation where we explore and understand your goals and set out what is possible, and what is not. We determine the natural hair colour and the boundaries of where your hairline should be. The pigment is placed gently into the skin with an SMP pen. The pen, similar to a Tattoo Gun, rapidly places pigment beneath the surface of the skin producing the shadow and appearance of three-dimensional, natural hair. Every Scalp Micropigmentation service is unique, and it is all completely customized to you!
